Tofino, June 21– 22, 2008   A Perfect Weekend

On time our group left with one car from our meeting point in Victoria. The weather and the mood of group was great. Our first stop was in Coombs to buy food for our lunch. Coombs is famous for its market and goats on the roof. In the shade of a tree we ate our lunch and giggled about the baby goats.

Little Qualicum Falls was our next stop. It is a nice part of a river with a small waterfall in a forest. This part of the river is under nature conservation. On this account the river is protected by a fence. If were there no fence, the river would you invite to flounder about in the water. Refreshed from this place we continued our journey to Tofino.

When we checked in our hotel everyone was hungry because it was high time for dinner. We ate some typical Canadian dishes in the hotel’s restaurant which was really delicious. But the evening was not finished. We drove to Chesterman’s Beach after dinner and had a campfire there. It was very windy and we needed some trials until our campfire was burning. We weren’t alone on the beach even though it was very windy. Some people used the strong wind for kiting. Our first day ended with a beautiful sun set.
The next morning our group split in two groups. The one group went whale watching and the other one visited a rainforest in the Pacific Rim National Park. We walked on a wooden trail through the forest. Even though the rainforest and the normal forest are both on the same island, there are some obvious differences. In a rainforest you see a lot of moss on the ground and on the tree trunks and the air humidity is higher.

After our hike through the rainforest, we picked up the other group in the whale watching station. They were cold but at the same time they looked happy. They showed us their pictures which they took of the whales. It was time for lunch so we stopped at a bakery in Tofino. When everyone organized their food and drink, we had time for shopping in a very famous local surf store. Some students stocked up on new clothes and shoes. On Long Beach we ate our lunch and after this we had enough time to discover the beach and take funny pictures.

On the way back to Victoria we took a break at Cathedral Grove. This forest is famous for his huge trees. I will never forget the feeling which I got when I entered this forest. I thought I was in an enchanted forest because the ambiance was like a fairy tale. You could only hear the river in the background which flows through the forest and you could see big sunbeams which broke through the treetops.

Our last stop was at a small lake. There we enjoyed the strong sun in the late afternoon and wallowed in good memories of our weekend together. This stop was the perfect end of a perfect weekend.
